The holidays are upon us again. Where did the year go? Did you know that the average person puts on about seven pounds between Halloween (candy, anyone?) and New Year’s Day? Parties, holiday meals, football games, happy hours, neighborhood gatherings. Food, food, and more food. Alcohol, too. This year doesn’t have to be the same. With some simple food swaps, you can cut your calorie intake and stay in those skinny jeans. Check out our Naughty and Nice List:
Naughty: Turkey Skin/Dark Meat Turkey (200 calories/3 oz.)
Nice: Skinless Turkey Breast (160 calories/3 oz.)
Naughty: Stuffing (500 calories/cup)
Nice: Make it with whole-wheat bread, broth, lots of veggies, and fresh herbs. Leave out the butter and cut back on the salt. (160 calories/cup)
Naughty: Mashed Potatoes (250 calories/cup)
Nice: Mash Yukon gold potatoes with chicken broth, chives, smashed garlic, and nonfat Greek yogurt (adds creaminess) (150 calories/cup)
Naughty: Candied Yams (300 calories/cup)
Nice: Smashed Maple Cinnamon Sweet Potatoes (175 calories/cup) – Smash baked sweet potatoes with 2 tbs. pure maple syrup and 1 tbs. ground cinnamon.
Naughty: Green Bean casserole (250 calories/cup)
Nice: Oven Roasted vegetables (75 calories/cup) – Roast eggplant, zucchini, bell peppers, and onion at 400 degrees for about 20-30 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar.
Naughty: Pecan Pie (700 calories/slice)
Nice: Pumpkin Pie – check out our yummy pumpkin pie recipe (less than 200 calories/slice)
Nice: Pomegranate Wine Spritzer – mix 4 oz. white wine with 2 oz. pomegranate juice and 2 oz. sparkling water. (140 calories)
Other holiday tips: bring a healthy dish (salad, fruit, pita and hummus, baked chips and salsa) to any holiday gathering; don’t go to any occasion hungry (have a snack first); focus on socializing rather than face-stuffing; drink lots of water; make sure to get some form of fun activity everyday.
Most important, have fun. A time for cheer, love, and laughter. It’s the holidays, after all.
